Don't out-hit the banger

Playing against bangers in rec pickleball: reset, take their pace, and stop trying to out-hit the hard hitter.

A banger in rec open play is not a puzzle about power. They hit hard, often from places they should not, and they will keep doing it until the ball comes back softer than they sent it. You do not beat that by matching them.

Take their pace, give it back dead

The job is to make the next ball a kitchen ball. Their drive is information. Your reset is the answer.

A reset is a winner is the tool. This page is the matchup. They are related. They are not the same cue.

The ego drive

SEEN. You wind up on a ball that is already at your chest. You try to “show them.” You miss long, or you sit one up even harder. Your partner takes a step back. The people waiting enjoy the show.

We often see the same pattern: the first hard ball gets your attention, the second gets your pride, and the third is the one you donate. They did not earn that point. You volunteered it.

If you have to out-hit them to feel like you are playing, you are already in their game. Rec bangers live there. You do not have to.

Did the next ball get quieter?

MEASURED on film: after their drive, did your next ball come back slower and higher, into the kitchen? Yes is a make. A counter-drive from your shoelaces is a miss, even if it felt brave.

One game. Count the resets that changed the pace. No league “banger win rate.”

INFERRED. You think hard is the language of this stack. Or you are embarrassed to dink in front of a hitter. Dink patience is still legal against someone who does not want to dink. Especially then.

You will not convert them

They may never drop. They may never dink. That is not your project. Your project is the next ball at their feet or into their kitchen, and your feet getting through the transition zone without taking the drive out of the air on the run.

If they stay back and keep driving, a deep, soft ball still moves them. If they crash, the reset still wins the job. You are not required to finish the point on the next swing.

The transition zone is where this matchup usually dies. They hit, you run, you swing. Advance, split, reset. Then take the next two steps.

Soft is the attack

The cue: deaden it. Open face, soft hands, let their pace die in the kitchen. Then get your feet back under you. Do not add a second plan about “hurting” them.

Open play will send you a banger you have never met. They will hit the first ball hard so the stack knows who they are. You can nod. You do not have to answer in kind.

Try this next session: you may not drive a ball that they just drove. Reset or drop. If you take a full swing at their pace, that is the miss — even if it went in.

This is the kind of thing a coach sees when they watch the whole match: the hard ball you chose to fight, not the one they hit. Film Room can watch a session with you.
