Feet before hands

Feet before hands in rec pickleball. Get there first, then swing. The cue that cleans up late contact.

Dead feet make talented hands look late.

At the kitchen, the hands want to hunt. The ball is close, the paddle is already up, and you reach. That’s how you volley off your back foot, pop the ball up, and wonder why your “good hands” disappear in games.

The split step is the shot. Small, quiet feet get you to a still base; then the hands have a job. If your feet are still arriving when you contact, you are not volleying. You are falling into the ball.

Watch a player who looks calm at the NVZ. Their chest is quiet. Their feet did the work a half-beat earlier. That’s the look you’re after — not faster hands.

Try this next session: For one full game, no volley until you feel both feet set. If you’re still moving, block or let it go. Hands only after the base.

This is the kind of thing a coach sees when they watch the whole match — not just the score. Film Room is where we do that with your session.
