Partner first

Partner first in rec doubles. Cover, call, and play the person next to you before you play the highlight.

In open play, your partner is the game. The opponents are the weather.

You didn’t pick this person. They didn’t pick you. That’s the whole format. The players who move up treat that as the work: early talk, honest coverage, no silent poaches, no body language that says “you blew it” after a miss.

Most open-play losses aren’t skill. They’re two strangers playing two singles matches on the same court. Middle balls with no call. Both covering the line. A sigh after a popped-up dink. Your opponents don’t have to be better. They just have to be a team for forty minutes.

Talk before the ball is hit. Face your partner after a miss, not the sideline. Cover the thing they just left, not the thing you wish they’d done.

Try this next session: Before each game, one sentence to your partner: who takes middle, and who talks first. Then do it. If you go quiet, you failed the session — even if you won.

This is the kind of thing a coach sees when they watch the whole match — not just the score. Film Room is where we do that with your session.
